R. F. Deckert’s Paintings: Now on Flickr!

The Michigan State University Museum’s current exhibition, Sympathetic Detail: R. F. Deckert and the Art of Natural History Illustration, displays only 23 of Deckert’s watercolors of snakes, toads, lizards, frogs, flowers, and birds. We’ve uploaded to Flickr those 23 images and 328 more!

I hope you take a look at these enchanting images. Exhibition visitors have been spending a lot of time in the Museum’s Art, Science and Creativity Gallery, getting up close to each painting and marveling over how one man’s eyes and hands and brain rendered in line and color and detail these subjects of scientific inquiry–yet with a bit of whimsy to engage a wider audience.

These frogs are standing in line to see the exhibition!
